Curvaceous Lines
“A trend we’re witnessing in furniture styles… is the incorporation of curving lines in upholstered furniture forms and case goods,”. Says Betty Brandolino, founder and creative director of Fresh Twist Studio. For example, we’ve seen curved sofa backs and curved sideboards develop, to mention a few.”
Bartone Interiors’ Kristin Bartone agrees. “In 2022, curved furniture with soft contours will be trendy,” she predicts. “From super duper to more cost retailers, soft lines, arcs, and curves have been included in practically every manufacturer’s furniture.” This was first launched last year, but it has gained a lot of traction.”
Ginger Curtis of Urbanology Designs has also experienced something similar—albeit on a smaller scale. “Fluted and ribbed detail can also be found on sofas, chairs, fireplace fronts, cabinetry, and vanities,” she adds. “It has an art deco feel to it.” This design dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was first employed to decorate Roman columns.”
Textured Surfaces
“Textured textiles, such as boucles, tweeds, and crushed velvets, were offered by nearly all of our merchants at High Point Market in October,” Brandolino says.
Caroline Brackett of Caroline Brackett Studio of Design echoes this sentiment. “Anything fuzzy, nubby, or warm is extremely on-trend in textures,” she explains. “In general, comfort will be desirable in 2022. Not that you have to forgo design. But furniture needs to be comfortable today that people are spending more time at home.”
Boucle wool fabric is used in a number of applications. “On furniture, cushions, and so on,” Curtis notes. “The texture is excellent. As it gives the room a sense of warmth and coziness.” Now that this material has grown so popular. We’ll look for new ways to use it. It’s a fantastic design element. But I’ll try to keep it fresh and surprising!”
Matte Metals
When it comes to kitchen and bath finishes and furnishings, Bill Darcy, president and CEO of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, forecasts a surge in matte finishes.
“For the next two to three years, the most popular designs for fixtures will have less sheen and more matte finishes in stainless, nickel, and pewter,” he says. “Matte or brushed black, or stainless will be favored finishes for gesture control or flushable toilet faucets, which are fast gaining popularity.”
Vintage Items
“Vintage furniture will continue to be incorporated into design,”. Says Brandolino, citing global supply chain delays as an example.
