There’s nothing better than spending a day out on the water. The fresh air, the peacefulness, and even the sound of the water lapping against the boat hull are something to experience.
With all that in mind, it would be horrible if you forgot an essential item and had to pull back into the dock just as your day on the water was beginning.
That’s why in this blog, we’ll give you a few of the essential items to pack for your day on the water, from your boating license to bottled water, food, snacks, and beyond.
1. The Proper Paperwork
The last thing you want is to be out on the water having a great time, then realize you forgot the paperwork that allows you to be on the boat. It’s recommended that you keep your boating license and registration in a dry box underneath the seat of your boat or down in the cabin if your boat is big enough to have one.
2. The Right Kind of Protection — Don’t Forget the Sunglasses
Of course, everyone knows that you need sunscreen, and plenty of it if you spend the day on the water, but there are a few other things you’ll also need for protection. Life jackets should be first on your list because you never know when an accident could happen, and it’s illegal not to have a life jacket for everyone on the boat at all times.
You’ll also want a good pair of sunglasses, such as purple lens sunglasses, as they shield your eyes from the glare of the water and prevent eye damage. Add a first aid kit tothe boat, and your protection will be complete.
3. Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated is super important when you’re out on the water. Many times, you’ll become dehydrated faster on the water than you will on land. This is because the wind on the water makes you think you’re not sweating when you really are. You should start drinking water as soon as you get on the boat to stay hydrated. It’s best to avoid sodas and alcohol when you’re on the boat as well, as they dehydrate you very quickly.
It’s also a good idea to take plenty of food with you, as there’s just something about spending the day on the water that will make you as hungry as a bear.
4. Games or a Good Book
While you’ll need plenty of water toys, there will come a time when everyone is exhausted from being in the water and just wants to curl up on the deck in a lounge chair. Make sure to bring along plenty of games to play and a few good books, at least one good book per person on board. This is great for quiet time when the kids are cranky and need to wind down from the day of fun as well. Besides, who doesn’t love a good beach read?
5. A Quality Dry Bag
Dry bags are one of the easiest overlooked items on a packing list for a day on the water. A high-quality dry bag will keep your phone, camera, and book dry at sea, so don’t forget to invest in one before your trip.
There is nothing quite like being out on the water with the wind in your hair. The water’s smells, sights, and sounds can’t be beaten. However, whether you’re in the ocean, a lake, or a river, there are certain items you don’t want to forget. No one wants to turn that boat around because they forgot an essential item that could ruin the fun before it even begins.
